This 3 day course is a combination of DSTO’s Counter Action Team (DSTO.CAT) roles and tactical trauma care in dynamic environments. It covers advanced techniques for multiple teams operating in a dismounted role within austere or non-permissive environments. Fundamentals will be drawn and built upon based on current special operation forces doctrine.
Day 1 is acute trauma training delivered through a combination of didactic lessons, skill stations, and progressive scenario training. The following 2 days are live fire skills rehearsal and confirmation running students through multi-team executive/close protection principles. DSTO.CAT covers the roles and responsibilities of the Counter Action Team element as a Quick Reaction Force.
The tactical trauma care module is based on current Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care guidelines and students earn certification in Stop the Bleed®
Prerequisites: At least Lvl 1 in past 2 years (preferable is Lvl 3) or any prior DSTO

- Care Under Fire
- Be able to identify, prioritize, and treat life threatening injuries
- Control Bleeding | Tourniquet application
- Open an Airway | Airway Management
- Treat Chest Wounds using Chest Seals
- Treat for Shock
- Dressing application | Wound Packing
- Transporting casualties and basic evac considerations
Kit List
- Clothing appropriate for the weather and climate conditions of the day. These are physically demanding days so clothing appropriate for hard use is recommended. Tactical pants, shirts and jackets are recommended. Ball cap or appropriate headwear.
- Appropriate footwear. Tactical boots, hiking shoes, or outdoor sneakers are recommended.
- Eye, Ear and Glove protection
- Knee pads
- First Line belt or Riggers Belt recommended
- Second Line Rig. Chest Rig recommended
- Body armour, or plate carrier and other PPE as utilized operationally.
- Mag pouch to hold 3-4+ pistol mags
- Pistol holster (Nylon or leather none shape holding / SERPA or any index-finger actuated holster are NOT PERMITTED. Students will be removed from the course if they do not have the correct/safe holsters). Staff recommend running a level 2 ALS or level 3 ALS & Hood retention holster.
- Modern semi-automatic pistol
- Modern semi-automatic rifle
- Minimum 400 reliable rounds for pistol (frangible desired)
- Minimum 600 reliable rounds for rifle (frangible desired)
- IFAK, TQ (CATs or SOFT-TW recommended), Olaes bandage and Chest Seal. We will have complete kits for purchase on site
- Repair and spare kit, multi-tools, CLP
- Paper, Pen and Stuff (PPnS)
- Hydration, Nutrition
- Face mask, gloves, disinfectant wipes/gel/spray for personal use.
